ABOUT US
Goju Kai Karate Bayside is dedicated to teaching the traditional art of Goju Kai Karate.
Karate helps students in all areas of their lives, not just the physical. We aim to teach our students discipline, self confidence, friendship and most importantly the art of karate. We offer programs for all ages that allow anyone to learn karate, while developing their fitness and confidence in a fun, safe and friendly environment.
Goju Kai Karate Bayside is affiliated with the International Karatedo Gojukai Association (IKGA), and draws a direct lineage to Goju Kai karate founder Grandmaster Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi. The club was established in the 1990s by Steve Colangelo Shihan, who was awarded his 4th dan by Gogen Yamaguchi in Japan. The club began in Cheltenham in Melbourne’s south-east, before moving nearby to Mentone for more than 20 years, Braeside for 4 years, and finally to our current dojo in Cheltenham.
Steve Shihan is the Patron and Chief Instructor of Goju Kai Karate Bayside, and serves as the Chief Instructor and Director of the Victorian Division of the IKGA.
Goju Kai Karate Bayside is operated by a not-for-profit, community-run association, the Victorian Goju Kai Karate Association Incorporated.
